Amazing Snowflakes

Since we weren’t likely to get any actual snow in December, we made our own blizzard from paper! We learned to fold and cut paper to make six-sided snowflakes, talked about how snowflakes form, and looked at some photos of real snow crystals take by Vermont farmer William Bentley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Exploring Cotton

Cotton is an amazing plant! We took a virtual field trip through a cotton field with photos and talked about the plant’s life cycle and all the many uses of its fibers. We also enjoyed playing with cotton balls.

DreamFields Farm Pumpkin Patch Trip

So, let’s see. Inflatables, a corn maze, pig races, baby goats to pet, and a rootin’-tootin’ cow barrel ride….what’s not to love at DreamFields Farm? The PEAK kids and parents alike had a fabulous day out and to top it off we enjoyed a hayride out to the pumpkin patch where each child chose their very own pumpkin. Good times!!

Airplane Fun

We had a great time exploring the history of flight, discussing what makes an airplane fly, and making and experimenting with our own paper airplanes.

Glo-Germs

This month for 4-H we learned about germs! We learned how they are absolutely everywhere, what harm they can do, and most importantly, some good hand washing skills and ways to prevent them from spreading. The germy cow that we passed around to “share” was a big help as well!

Chasing Rainbows

This month’s meeting was all about rainbows! We looked at pictures of different types of rainbows, learned what makes a rainbow and talked about different places we’ve seen rainbows. Luckily, it was a sunny day, so we were even able to make some rainbows of our own with a glass of water, a mirror and a sheet of white paper.

Berry Farm Tour

This month we got out early to try and beat the heat for our berrying adventure. A huge thank you to Barber Berry Farm for giving us a tour of their fields and teaching us about hydroponics. We also enjoyed picking and eating their delicious berries!

Tie Dye Fun

We had so much fun with our last tie-dying experiment, we decided to do it again! The kids had a fabulous time, and ended up with some great looking shirts!

Chicks!

We borrowed an incubator from the 4-H office this month, hoping to have hatching chicks to watch for our meeting. We discussed eggs and chickens, cracked some grocery store eggs to identify the different parts, and everyone had a chance to see the incubating eggs and learn about the process. Unfortunately, the eggs didn’t actually start hatching until almost everyone had left, but several families were able to come back and see the emerging chicks over the next 24 hrs, and we updated everyone else with pictures and videos online.

Visit to the Landfill

Our visit to the North Montgomery Landfill finally happened! After having to postpone a few times due to rain, we were glad to be able to head out on the berms to see how a landfill works. Our wonderful guide, Mr. Cork, was full of interesting information about the history and daily operations of the landfill and the kids enjoyed seeing all the large machinery at work.
