The Art of Drawing and Doodling

During the Art of Drawing and Doodling fall workshop the kids were introduced to shading and perspective, creative doodling, and drawing from life and instruction books. We also had fun exploring the art of the stickman!

Hippo Fun

Another great day at the zoo with our friends! We loved watching the baby bison race around North America and the baby Siamang ape swinging and playing. The biggest thrill of the day was finally getting a good look at the elusive pygmy hippo. He was out running across the pasture and grazing with the antelope. What a treat!

Berry Farm Tour

This month we got out early to try and beat the heat for our berrying adventure. A huge thank you to Barber Berry Farm for giving us a tour of their fields and teaching us about hydroponics. We also enjoyed picking and eating their delicious berries!

Watching the Big Cats

Today’s highlight was seeing the big cats up and around! The jaguars were playing, the cougars were pacing, and even the elusive lynx left his hiding place in the rocks and came down to watch us.

Science Friday at McWane Center

The drive to Birmingham was well worth it! We arrived early and spent most of the day exploring all the fascinating interactive exhibits at the McWane Center. A few favorites were the bed of nails, the dino dig and tug-of-war with the giant lever. Can’t wait to go back again soon!

New Friends at the Zoo

When we headed for the park today, we were surprised to see new horse trails almost complete! We’ve noticed the horses on the back side of the lake when we ride the train lately, and it was nice to see them out and interacting with zoo visitors. One of the handlers let the kids visit with the horses, and we’re now anxiously awaiting the opening of the horse ride attraction!

Visit to the Landfill

Our visit to the North Montgomery Landfill finally happened! After having to postpone a few times due to rain, we were glad to be able to head out on the berms to see  how a landfill works. Our wonderful guide, Mr. Cork, was full of interesting information about the history and daily operations of the landfill and the kids enjoyed seeing all the large machinery at work.

Big Yawn!

We had another great day at the zoo. The kids even enjoyed the animals, instead of begging to go immediately to the park. We saw the golden eagle being exercised and learned a bit about it from its handler. The favorite of the day were the spotted jaguars, especially the biggest yawn ever…

A Day at the MOOseum

The Alabama Cattlemen’s MOOseum is always a hit with the kids. We learned about  cows, traced the history of the cattle industry in Alabama from its origins, donned chef’s garb to learn about food safety and nutrition, and pretended we were cowboys and cowgirls from the Wild West in the dress-up room.

Puppy Time

Our visit to the Humane Society was a huge hit with the kids. They enjoyed playing with the cats, and brought them some new toys. Everyone laughed at their antics as they jumped and climbed around the room.

The puppy room was also a hit, and no one could decide which one was cutest. We especially enjoyed taking one of the puppies into a private room to play. The hard part was leaving empty-handed, as we all wished we could take home every single puppy. :-(
