Poetry reading in the park
March’s book club meeting was met with gorgeous weather so we decided to hit the fresh air and take the kids to the park for it. We heard poetry from William Blake, Shel Silverstein, and more. We even heard original works from a couple of the kids. For April we are discussing whatever the kids wish to read.
Biography Time
Our February meeting was a success. The children discussed the biographies they had chosen. This was a wonderful way for everyone to learn about the people that interest their friends.
*Disclaimer, the photo does not represent the books actually read. I had forgotten my camera.*
Fall in on our mind and in our books
October’s book club meeting focused on books about Fall. Some children talked about passages in their favorite books in which their characters were going through the Fall season, while others discussed traditional Fall items like pumpkins and the changing of leaves. Several of the children created artwork inspired by their books to share as well.
A zoo at the zoo

What a fun trip to the zoo this month. We headed straight for the train for a quick tour of the place. Then we all had the same thought, we needed to go feed the otters! Well we checked out all the animals along the way, but finally we made it to the otters. Unfortunately all the school groups that also decided to go to the zoo that day had also thought to feed the otters. They were full and wanted nothing to do with our food. The kids were great sports though and were more than happy to burn off their disappointment playing on the playground. Hopefully our next monthly trip will be both cooler and way less crowded.
Animal Reports!
Our September meeting brought forth a beautiful day for the park. This month we listened to some of the kids give animal reports. We enjoyed listening and learning about Sphynx cats, Eastern Screech Owls, dogs, lizards, butterflies, and Giant Pandas. After that the kids ran and played on the playground enjoying the wonderful weather.
The Tadpole Experiment
Our 4-H meeting topic of discussion this month was tadpoles! One of the parents had retrieved quite a few tadpoles from her pond to share with all of the members of the group. The kids all loved learning about tadpoles and just watching them swim around in their container. The kids were all thrilled with the idea of raising tadpoles even if not all the moms were.
Creek Walk at ANC
Our creek walk at the Alabama Nature Center was a wonderfully exciting and entertaining day for both the kids and the parents…although some of the moms hadn’t realized it would actually involve walking in a real creek. But , everyone was a good sport about it and just rolled up their pants and headed in. Our guide did a wonderful job talking to all the kids regardless of their age. We hope to get back to the Alabama Nature Center soon for another fun filled adventure.
